How to invoice in Austria
Austria scales its requirements to the invoice value, so start with the standard set: a sequential invoice number, the issue date, the supplier's name, address and UID (VAT ID), a clear description and quantity of the goods or services, the net amount, the VAT rate and amount, and the gross total. For invoices over €10,000 you must also state the customer's UID. Simplified invoices (Kleinbetragsrechnung) up to €400 may omit some details, such as the customer's data and separate net/VAT split.
| Austria at a glance | Detail |

| Currency | EUR (€) |
| Standard VAT | 20% |

Tax ID format: The UID (VAT ID) is "ATU" followed by 8 digits, e.g. ATU12345678. Domestic businesses also hold a tax number (Steuernummer) from their tax office, but the UID is what appears on invoices..

VAT & reverse charge
For cross-border work, the right wording matters. Invoice Forever offers ready-made Austrian VAT notes such as:
- VAT charged at the applicable Austrian rate (20% standard; 13% or 10% reduced where relevant).
- Intra-Community supply - VAT-exempt under Art. 138 of the EU VAT Directive (Art. 6 (1) UStG); the customer's valid UID is required.
- Reverse charge - VAT to be accounted for by the recipient under Art. 196 of the EU VAT Directive (Section 19 UStG).
E-invoicing in Austria
E-invoicing is mandatory for suppliers to Austrian central federal government bodies (B2G) and has been since 1 January 2014, submitted through the official e-rechnung.gv.at portal (via the Unternehmensserviceportal / USP) or the Peppol network using ebInterface 6.0 or Peppol BIS Billing 3.0. There is no domestic B2B e-invoicing mandate as of July 2026 — B2B e-invoicing remains voluntary and by mutual agreement. Austria is expected to align with the EU's ViDA rules (cross-border digital reporting from July 2030), but no domestic B2B mandate or timeline has been enacted.
Invoice Forever can export a structured EN 16931 / Peppol BIS (UBL) e-invoice alongside the PDF (beta) — the format most of these mandates are built on. You still send it via your own access point, and some countries require their own national format.
Verified 23 July 2026 against the source. E-invoicing rules are changing quickly, so always confirm the current position with the Austrian tax authority (Finanzamt Österreich, part of the Bundesministerium für Finanzen / BMF) before you rely on it. This page is general guidance, not tax advice.
Payment terms in Austria
Payment terms of 14 to 30 days are typical in Austrian B2B, with 30 days net a common default. State the due date clearly and include your IBAN and BIC for bank transfer, still the dominant payment method.
